Implanon, also known as “The Rod”, is a 4cm long, thin contraceptive rod, placed under the skin of your upper arm. It slowly releases progestogen (similar to a natural hormone produced by a body), and is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy for 3 years.
An area on the inner arm above the elbow is cleaned and then numbed with local anaesthetic. Then the doctor or nurse puts the implant under the skin. The procedure is minimally invasive and takes approximately 20minutes. After the implant is inserted, a dressing is put on which should stay on for 3-5 days. The arm is bandaged to reduce bruising, this bandage should be left on for up to 24 hours. If you would like to see if Implanon is right for you, make an appointment to have a talk with one of the doctors, or nurse practitioner. We may be able to insert it on the same day. Practitioners offer both insertion and removal of Implanon.
